ToggleText was established in 1993 as a translation and localisation service bureau. By 1998, we had expanded to include a Natural Language Engineering Section, with a focus on the creation and delivery of automatic (machine) translation systems and related multilingual processing products and tools for the Asia-Pacific region.

Introducing Kataku
In 2000, ToggleText released its first product, Kataku, which automatically translated between Indonesian and English. Today, the continually improved descendant of this translation technology underlies a range of Kataku products and is still the only quality-assessed automatic translator for this language pair. The global acceptance, power and demand for this broad-domain language technology is highlighted by the millions of translations performed by the free trial service on our homepage every month.

ToggleText also offers Kataku product licenses and accounts to support clients with more pervasive and high-volume requirements for translation. Our clients include academic institutions, multinational commercial bodies, government institutions, and non-profit organisations as well as small and mid-size companies.

ToggleText is among only a small handful of companies worldwide who have been successful in the field of automatic translation. ToggleText has distinction of being the only Australian company working in the field of Machine Translation, as well as being the world's leading experts in Austronesian machine translation.

Kataku Technology
The technology which ToggleText employs is a practical combination of excellence in research in the fields of artificial intelligence, computational linguistics, lexicography, configuration and quality control. In the course of developing Kataku, $$TOGGLETEXT has fostered the formation and growth of an extended team of experienced computational linguists, lexicographers and software engineers. ToggleText welcomes interaction and visits with experts from around the globe in our efforts to create an innovative and exciting research and production environment.

Pioneering SMS and email translation
In 2006 ToggleText created and introduced the Kataku SMS product in response to the pressing Indonesian requirement to translate SMS messages and email using mobile phone technology.

The technology needed to translate such ill-formed and jargon-ridden utterances, without any context, was a major advance on that needed for the already difficult task of translating well-formed standard text. The risk of failing to solve this problem was immense, but with the support of excellent researchers and our consumer base, ToggleText leveraged its ability to translate standard text to make sense of personal and informal utterances by using "relaxed linguistic conditions". Today, Kataku SMS is offered directly through the mobile phone network within Indonesia, and is now also being offered in other Asia-Pacific regions.

Lexicography and termbank standardisation
ToggleText is investing in the current push to create ISO standards for termbanks, to ensure that future lexicons and termbanks are standardised and thus reusable across platforms and across software tools. Our termbank researchers are involved in local and international research and development to produce management tools for the creation of large-scale termbanks suitable for both human use and software applications.
